Barcelona Picasso Museum
Open its doors in 1963, and the museum is exclusively dedicated to the work of Spanish artists. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was the most acclaimed artist of the 20th century, he was born in Malaga (south of Spain), but he adopted Barcelona as his house for many years.
When did Picasso move to Barcelona?
Picasso’s family move to Barcelona from La Coruña in 1895. Those days Barcelona was in the middle of the urbanistic revolution (Cardá plan). Picasso was in the education period and entry to the School of Art (La Llotja). So he opened several workshops and joined the cultural environment, and they got together in Els Quatre Gats.
Picasso lived in Barcelona until 1904, and then he moved to Paris.

Barcelona Picasso Museum comprises five Catalan Gothic buildings that the Barcelona City Council acquired in El Born neighborhood in Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella district.

Museum was born will of Picasso, who, in 1960, expressed his desire to open it in the city where he was educated. In 1963 and thanks to the work of his secretary, Jaume Sabartés, the museum was already a reality. However, due to the artist’s manifest opposition to the regime, the museum could not be opened with the name we know it today and was inaugurated under the Sabartés Collection.

Showrooms are divided according to the maturing of the painter over the years, with more than 4,000 works in the permanent collection, mainly the artist’s initial phases.
The museum contains a collection that runs throughout his life, including drawings of his childhood in-class notebook sheets, family portraits, and works of the pink and blue stage.
